When preparing for a Kilimanjaro climbing tour, choosing the right route is key to ensuring a positive and successful experience. Let’s explore some of the popular routes available:

  1. Marangu Route: Also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, this is the oldest and most popular route for Kilimanjaro climbing tours. It offers a relatively easier terrain and the unique advantage of accommodation in huts instead of tents. The familiarity and comfort of the huts can provide a cozy atmosphere for trekkers.
  2. Machame Route: Referred to as the “Whiskey” route, this challenging and scenic option is perfect for experienced hikers seeking a memorable adventure. With its steep trails and breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems, the Machame Route offers a sense of accomplishment and a chance to immerse oneself in the stunning natural beauty of the mountain.
  3. Rongai Route: If you prefer a less crowded and slightly less challenging option, the Rongai Route is an excellent choice. Approaching Kilimanjaro from the northern side, this route provides a peaceful and serene journey through scenic landscapes. It has a higher success rate, making it a great option for beginners or those who appreciate a more tranquil trail.
  4. Lemosho Route: For experienced trekkers seeking a longer and more challenging route, the Lemosho Route is a top recommendation. This scenic option approaches Kilimanjaro from the western side, offering varied terrain and breathtaking views. The Lemosho Route is known for its sense of adventure and provides a less crowded experience for those who prefer a more intimate connection with nature.
  5. Shira Route: Another western approach to Kilimanjaro, the Shira Route merges with the Lemosho Route after a few days. It is best suited for experienced climbers with good acclimatization capabilities. The Shira Route is renowned for its high altitude and offers a unique challenge for those seeking a more demanding and exhilarating adventure.
  6. Umbwe Route: Considered the steepest and most challenging route, the Umbwe Route should only be attempted by highly experienced climbers who possess prior high-altitude trekking experience and excellent physical condition. This demanding route is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are up for the challenge, it offers a truly rewarding and unforgettable experience.
  7. Northern Circuit Route: This is the newest and longest route on Kilimanjaro, circling around the northern slopes of the mountain. It offers excellent acclimatization opportunities and stunning scenery. The Northern Circuit Route provides a remote and less crowded experience compared to other routes, making it an attractive choice for trekkers looking to immerse themselves in the wilderness and enjoy the beauty of Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro Helicopter Rescue

HELICOPTER RESCUE

Kilimanjaro Helicopter Rescue is a helicopter rescue service that operates on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It provides emergency medical and evacuation services to climbers who are injured or become ill while climbing the mountain.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and attracts thousands of climbers every year. Despite its popularity, climbing Kilimanjaro can be a challenging and dangerous activity, and climbers may experience altitude sickness, hypothermia, or other medical emergencies.

In case of an emergency, Kilimanjaro Helicopter Rescue can dispatch a helicopter to the location of the injured or sick climber and transport them to a hospital or medical facility for treatment. The rescue service is staffed by highly trained pilots, doctors, and paramedics who are experienced in high-altitude rescue operations.

Kilimanjaro Helicopter Rescue is a valuable resource for climbers on the mountain, as it can provide rapid response and evacuation in the event of a medical emergency. However, climbers should always take appropriate precautions to minimize their risk of injury or illness while climbing, such as acclimatizing properly, staying hydrated, and wearing appropriate clothing and equipment.

SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN

The air at the top of Kilimanjaro contains about half as much oxygen as the air at sea level, so climbers may experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, and shortness of breath.

To help acclimate to the altitude, climbers typically use the “climb high, sleep low” strategy, where they ascend to a higher elevation during the day and then descend to a lower elevation to sleep. This allows the body to gradually adjust to the thinner air.

It’s important to note that while you may not require supplemental oxygen, it’s still essential to consult with a doctor before attempting to climb Kilimanjaro, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or if you have never been at high altitudes before.

Your Tanzania Exploration expert guide will monitor you throughout the trek, by monitoring your blood oxygen levels, heart rate and blood pressure with an oxy-meter and blood pressure machine. Your guide will administer oxygen in an extreme case of attitude sickness or if you present symptoms that  require supplemental oxygen at a higher altitude.
